My Website Theme

Where to Find WordPress themes

WordPress themes can be found through several sources, including the official WordPress Theme Directory, third-party marketplaces, and independent theme developers. The WordPress Theme Directory offers free themes that can be installed directly through the WordPress dashboard. This is a convenient option for beginners because themes are reviewed against WordPress guidelines and can be updated through the dashboard. When choosing a theme from any source, it’s important to consider its compatibility with the latest version of WordPress, update frequency, customer reviews, security, pricing, and available support. I would also make sure the theme is responsive so visitors can easily navigate my website on both desktop and mobile devices.

Understanding WordPress Theme Files

WordPress themes are made up of different files that work together to control a website’s appearance, layout, and functionality. The required files depend on whether the theme is a classic theme or a block theme.

For a classic WordPress theme, the two essential files are:

  • style.css: Contains the theme’s identifying information and CSS styling rules.
  • index.php: Serves as the main fallback template when WordPress cannot find a more specific template.

Other commonly included theme files are:

  • screenshot.png: Provides the preview image displayed in the WordPress theme directory and dashboard.
  • Images directory: Where all images that are associated with the theme are stored
  • functions.php: Adds theme features, registers menus, and loads stylesheets or scripts.
  • header.php: Contains the header structure for classic themes, including the site’s branding and navigation.
  • footer.php: Contains the footer structure for classic themes.
  • single.php: Controls how individual blog posts appear in classic themes.
  • page.php: Controls the layout of individual pages in classic themes.
  • archive.php: Determines how collections of posts, such as categories and archives, are displayed in classic themes.

Choosing the Right Theme

When choosing a theme for The Desert Dish, I compared three WordPress themes: Astra, Kadence, and Blocksy. I created a decision matrix to evaluate each theme based on five criteria: visual design, mobile responsiveness, customization, performance, and blog features. These factors were important because I wanted a visually appealing, easy-to-navigate website that highlights my restaurant reviews and food photography while performing well on different devices. I also wanted the flexibility to customize the design as my blog grows. Although Astra and Blocksy received the same overall score in my decision matrix, I ultimately chose Astra because I preferred its clean design, customization options, and overall fit for The Desert Dish.

Installing Astra

I installed Astra directly through the WordPress dashboard using the wp-admin method. I navigated to Appearance → Themes → Add New Theme, searched for Astra, and clicked Install followed by Activate. The process was straightforward and didn’t require any manual downloads, file uploads, or additional software. Once activated, I visited The Desert Dish to make sure my pages, posts, and navigation were displaying correctly with the new theme.
